Apple released an update to the current iOS6 last week. If you haven't updated already please read ahead to find out why you should. You may find the need to update in the coming weeks and months when app updates require you to do or if you download a new app which needs the latest update. My primary reason was because the new interface design has an ease and crisp aesthetic that the prior operating system didn't quite offer. Overall the new operating system if far more intuitive. I find that the placement of some of the features (bluetooth on/off, wi-fi on/off, airplane mode, do not disturb, etc.) are now easier to access as well.
Here are a few features you should know about the update:
1. To close apps when multiple apps are open (this is multi-tasking which can also use battery) you now double tap the home button and swipe the image above each app upwards. You can see what you are closing so this feature is very helpful.
2. To search your iPad from the home screen press and slide down. It should then reveal a search box.
3. To lock your screen orientation (from landscape or portrait view), have quick access to your camera, turn on or off bluetooth & wi-fi, control sound, and more, now you can swipe upwards from the bottom of the home screen. These options are all available in a transparent mask.
4. There's no need for a flashlight app (on the iphone)! You can find this by swiping upwards as well.
5. Automatic updates are available now: Go to settings> iTunes and App Store> turn on automatic updates. By doing this you will no longer need to update each app as they are re-vamped.
6. The iPad Photos application now has photo filters.
7. There is now transparency through apps and folders on the home screens. Due to this feature more busy backgrounds or wallpapers may distract from the clearness of the app title itself. For this reason you may want to choose a simple wallpaper for the home screen and more animated or preferred backgrounds on the lock screen.
8. iTunes now has a Music app which contains your purchased or added music, along with a 'radio' of which you can select music genres and listen to songs from that genre continuously (i.e. Pandora).
9. The new calendar allows you swipe upwards and downwards to toggle between months and like so many other designs within this update, the streamlined layout makes for easier usage.
10. Folder/ app grouping capabilities have improved greatly. When you click on merged the folder you can now clearer see each app inside. You can also add multiple pages of apps in one single folder. To make a group of apps/folder by topic hold your finger down on the app. Drag the app on top of another app you'd like to join to the folder. Continue adding apps this way. Rename to folder by erasing the given title if you choose to do so.
There is much more to learn about iOS 7, however these are some of the most vital differences that I noted. I care to read more visit Apple's video and article explaining the new OS in greater detail.
